“The Sins” by Louise Kennedy is a book about ordinary people who want to live ordinary lives in “extraordinary” times. The main character, Cusla Lavery, is a young woman living in a small town in Ireland. Her life is turned upside down after she meets a married man from Belfast one evening in a pub, and as a result, she is increasingly immersed in a reality where love has limits, and individual desires and social reality are often incompatible. “It doesn’t matter what you do,” Michael tells Cusla, “it’s who you are.” And then the reader sees that the entire narrative is about this ambiguity — a traditional theme of a realist work, the confrontation of action and the true nature of the person, which unfolds in the book against the backdrop of socio-political confrontation. What price does the forbidden union cost the couple? Or how much happiness is possible in a world where “who you are” is more important than “what you do?”
