Marcel Proust (1871-1922) is recognized as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century, despite the fact that he is called the “author of one work”. The French writer, who is considered the father of modernism, the founder of the decadent novel, became famous for his cycle of seven novels – “In Search of Lost Time”. “On the Side of the Swan” is the first book of this cycle.
Born and raised in a wealthy family of high society, the life of the writer was influenced by the significant changes that occurred in French history at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The weakening of the influence of the French aristocracy and the strengthening of the middle class were later reflected in his work. “In Search of Lost Time” is a collection of impressions received at different stages of Marcel Proust’s real life, deeply embedded in his mind. In the first book of the cycle, the narrator recalls his childhood. Nine-year-old Marcel fell ill with asthma and was forced to spend the summer in Illie. Illie became a combret in “Recherche du temps perdu” (In Search of Lost Time). It is there that the main events of the novel take place. “On the Side of Swann” tells us about the narrator’s childhood and an important episode in the life of an old family friend, Monsieur Swann. A deeply philosophical-psychological, “impressionistic” text that, instead of objectively analyzing events, offers an intuitive insight and subjective description, penetrates deeply into the reader’s mind and leaves an indelible impression.
It is noteworthy that “On the Side of Swann” is being published in Georgian for the first time – more than a century after the book was published (1913).
