Louis-Ferdinand Céline (real surname Detouche, 1894-1961) is a famous French writer of the 20th century. In the polyphony of French literature, with his novel Journey to the End of the Night he occupies a completely unique place with his characteristic voice, which is called Céline's music. It was created using colloquial French and the language of the underclass - argo - something that no one had attempted before Céline.
In the novel, the narrator is the main character, Bardamu, who travels through the ages of life's despair; He feels on his own skin the horror of the First World War, the misery of the French colony in Africa, the breaking of the American dream in New York and Detroit, the completely unremarkable existence of people in the suburbs of Paris, where he starts working as a doctor after returning from America.
The novel is long, but the narration is dynamic and saturated with black humor. Céline's Music is not romantic, but it is soul-stirring and heroic. It is impossible not to be familiar with the degenerates described by Celine, who form a gallery of various juries, liars and frauds. There are also positive characters in the novel: an American woman, Molly; Also, in part, Alcide – a French official in a deaf village in Africa. While traveling in this vast darkness, where sometimes even such a light fades, Bardamu realizes that he is in the middle of the night.
